3 Ways to Recover from a Long Dance Competition Weekend
Dance Competitions can be exhausting! When I was in dance I would always wonder how year after year I did it. But I developed a routine. But it did take trial and error. From early in the morning to the wee hours of the night it was overwhelming and exhausting. But as I mentioned here are 3 things I did as well as my teammates to combat the craziness of dance competitions.
1.) Rest
One of the most important things I had to remind myself sometimes, rest! Of course, my brain would be going through the emotions of a crazy-filled weekend. Having some time though to meditate, take a nap, or even go on a slow walk outside helped me ease the tension in my mind. Reminding myself that I worked hard and deserve a break helped me obtain this first recovery method.
2.) Hydrate
Making sure the body is well hydrated is a big rule to make sure to follow. After all, the running around and competing I caught myself moments I would not drink water for hours! Having enough water/electrolytes in the body is crucial to prevent dehydration. Also making sure to get enough nutrients is important as well which helps recover muscles faster!
3.) Soothe Muscles
Whether it be sore, pulled, strained, or even just exhausted soothing muscles on any level of pain is crucial. Taking Epson salt baths or even icing/warming those muscles prevents long-term damage and fatiqueness. Take care of your body! You only got one!
As we head into the early months of dance competition season I want to remind my fellow dancers that the sport is hard but so worth it in the end. When I realized how much I loved to dance and loved taking care of myself, no other score mattered!
